Member ready to act on Intercontinental title

Following a press release from Frank Warren Promotions that declared the upcoming heavyweight battle between David Haye and Dereck Chisora for fringe versions of the world title, the WBA have told WBN that the vote on the fight is yet to take place.

WBA Vice President Gilberto Mendoza is set to meet with members of the committee to accumulate all the views on whether to put their Intercontinental heavyweight belt up for grabs on July 14th and expects a decision on the vote shortly.

“The World Boxing Association championship committee is in the process of evaluating the sanction approval,” Mendoza told World Boxing News.

“I am just waiting for the vote of the members on whether the fight between David Haye and Dereck Chisora will be sanctioned for the Intercontinental title.”

Mendoza is cautiously seeking out confirmation of all the legal issues involved with staging the fight after the outcry from some quarters and will then determine if the WBA can rubberstamp the contest.

“The jurisdictional situation between British Boxing Board of Control and Luxembourg Boxing Federation will be determined by local laws.

“The WBA may have policies or guidelines but never against the freedom to choose or free economy. If there is no legal impedimentand the championship committee approves the fight, then WBA will sanction it as Intercontinental championship,” Mendoza told WBN.

The second body to sanction the bout are the WBO, who have put up their International title on the line for the Upton Park clash in a move that would have disappointed the British Boxing Board of Control and the WBC, who are both against the fight being held.
