Unbeaten Uchiyama retains WBA 130lb belt by stopping Perez after ninth

Unbeaten Takashi Uchiyama (22-0-1, 18 KOs), 129.75, scored his ninth successful defense of his WBA super-featherweight belt when he controlled the contest, averted the challenger’s furious attacks with his excellent defensive skills and finally had game Argentine challenger Israel Perez (27-3-1, 16 KOs), 129.25, retire after the ninth round on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan. The 35-year-old skillful champ made good use of accurate and effective jabs against the free-swinging Argentine, also 35, and weakened him with accurate body bombardments as the contest progressed. Uchiyama accelerated his attack in round nine, when he pinned the fading Perez to the ropes and battered him with vicious combinations upstairs and downstairs. The exhausted and damaged Argentine decided to stay on the stool rather than go for the tenth session.
