WBA Press.  March 11.  Twelve years ago, the name of the Japanese Celes Kobayashi rumbled for Venezuelans, when he knocked out the four-time world champion Leo “Torito” Gamez, and grabbed the WBA Super Flyweight championship bel.

The fight took place in Japan on March 11, 2001.  Gamez was 38 years old, and had all the experience needed to make the first defense of the fourth title he had won.

Gámez was world champion in the minimumweight once, twice in flyweight, and once super flyweight.

However, Gámez Gamez met the talented Japanese who was hungry and had many resources in the ring, who surprised him in the tenth round at the Yokohama Arena.

For that moment, Kobayashi had a record of 22-4-3, 13 KO, while the champion’s record was 33-7, 25 KO’s.

The fight was a real battle as both sides were always attacking, up to round ten, at 2:29 minute, Kobayashi conected a right hand that knocked Gamez down.

The Venezuelan got the count, got up but was so disoriented thar referee Armando Garcia stopped the bout.

Kobayashi became the new WBA Super Flyweight champion.

At present, Gámez is considered a living boxing legend in Latin America. “He always left Venezuela’s name very high, and he is the second four-time champion in Latin America”. Said Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, WBA vice president.

Gámez is a trainer of new talents at the Luis Beltrán Díaz Gym in Maracay, Aragua, Venezuela.

Hace doce años el nombre del japonés Celes Kobayashi retumbó para los venezolanos, después que noqueara al Tetracampeón Leo “Torito” Gámez y le arrebatara el cinturón súper mosca de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo.

La pelea fue en Japón, el 11 de marzo de 2001. Gámez contaba con 38 años de edad, y la experiencia necesaria para salir airoso de su primera defensa del cuarto título que ostentaba en su carrera.

Gámez fue  campeón del peso mínimo, dos oportunidades en mosca,   y una vez en súper mosca.

Sin embargo, Gámez se topó con un talentoso japonés con hambre y muchos recursos en el ring, que lo sorprendió en el décimo asalto en la Arena de Yokohama.

Para el momento, Kobayashi tenía 22 triunfos, 13 KO, con cuatro derrotas y tres empates, mientras que el campeón del momento llegaba a Japón con 33 ganadas, 25KO, siete derrotas.

La refriega fue una batalla, de lado y lado siempre estuvieron al ataque, hasta el décimo asalto, cuando a los 2 minutos con 29 segundos Kobayashi conectó una derecha que envió a la lona a Gámez.

El venezolano recibió conteo de protección, se levantó pero estaba desorientado por lo que Armando García decidió detener el combate.

Kobayashi se convertía en el nuevo campeón súper mosca de la AMB.

Actualmente, Gámez es considerado como una de las leyendas vivientes del boxeo Latino americano. “Siempre dejo en alto Venezuela. Es el segundo tetracampeón de la región Latina”, lo describe Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, vicepresidente de la AMB.

Gámez es entrenador de nuevos talentos en el gimnasio Luis Beltrán Díaz, de Maracay, en el Estado Aragua, Venezuela.
