Gutierrez retains WBA 105lb title

WBA Interim minimumweight champion Sammy Gutierrez (27-5-2, 18 KOs) of Mexico retained his title by way of sixth round TKO over Renan Trongco (8-3, 5 KOs) of the Philippines. The southpaw Trongco came out strong dropping Gutierrez in the first round. Gutierrez easily beat the count. Trongco immediatley jumped on Gutierrez in hopes of finishing him off with a series of hard straight lefts to the head. Guiterrez firing back weathered the storm and made it to the final bell of round one. Gutierrez, listening to his corner’s advice, invested in body work over the next few rounds. The effort paid off as Trongco was beginning to tire badly by round four and his punches no longer had any snap on them. Gutierrez was deducted one point in round six by the referee for excessive use of the elbow. Moments later Gutierrez upped the pressure working Trongco over on the ropes with barrage of head and body shots. The referee decided he had seen enough and waved the bout off. The official time of the stoppage was 2:19 of round six.
