During the 60’s Brazil lived the thrill of boxing through the fists of Eder Jofre, who gave his country the first world title. Today this figure is 77 years old, so the family of the AMB sends him a warm greeting.

Jofre was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1936. He defended the green yellow shirt of Brazil national team in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

In 1957 he became professional and when he had a record of 34 win with two draws, the National Boxing Association gave him the opportunity to fight for the first world belt.

The fight took place on November 18, 1960, at the Olympic Auditorium of Los Angeles, USA. The Mexican Eloy “Emeterio” Sánchez was the obstacle to win the bantamweight vacant title.

The fight made it to the sixth round, when Jofre knocked Shanchez out at 1:30 second. So the Brazilian made history and win the first championship for his country.

In Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, on March 25, 1961 Jofre defended against Piero Rollo his championship.

On August 19, 1961 he travelled to Caracas to face Ramón Arias and knocked him out in round 7, on his second title defense.

Jofre made five more fights from 1962 to 1964, remaining as the absolute Bantamweight King. Japanese Fighting Harada broke the string of victories defeating him by split decision over 15 rounds in the Aichi Prefecture gym.

The Brazilian had the stain in his record after 48 victories and three draws.

The rematch took place on May 31, the following year and again, Harada won by unanimous decision at the Nihon Budokan of Tokyo.

Jofre made 25 more fights after his losses before Harada, and he conquered a WBC belt, and finally retired in 1976, with a record of 72-2-4, 50 KO’s.

After his retirement, Jofre devoted himself to training and invest in some Business. Besides he is one of the exclusive members of the Boxing Hall of Fame.

Durante la década de los años 60 Brasil vivió la emoción del boxeo a través de los puños de Eder Jofre, quien le regaló a su país el primer título mundial. Hoy esta figura cumple 77 años, por lo que la Familia de la AMB le envía una calurosa felicitación.

Jofre nació en Sao Paulo, Brasil, en 1936. Defendió la camiseta verde amarilla de la selección nacional de Brasil, en los Juegos Olímpicos de Melbourne 1956.

Llegó al rentado en 1957, y cuando tuvo marca de 34 peleas ganadas con dos empates, la Asociación Nacional de Boxeo le dio la oportunidad de disputar su primer cinturón mundial.

La Batalla fue el 18 de noviembre de 1960, en el auditorio Olímpico de Los Ángeles, en Estados Unidos. El mexicano Eloy “Emeterio” Sánchez era el obstáculo a vencer por el título gallo, vacante en el momento.

Fue una pelea que llegó hasta el sexto asalto, cuando Jofre puso fin con un nocaut al minuto con 30 segundos. Así, el brasileño hacía historia y conquistaba por primera vez una faja mundial para su país.

En el Estadio Botafogo, en Río de Janeiro, el 25 de marzo de 1961 Jofre se midió a Piero Rollo en defensa del cinto gallo.

El 19 de agosto de 1961 viajó hasta Caracas, para medirse a Ramón Arias a quien noqueó en el séptimo round, en lo que fue su segunda defensa de la faja.

Jofre realizó cinco peleas más desde 1962 a 1964, manteniéndose como rey absoluto del peso gallo. El freno se lo puso el japonés Fighting Harada quien le ganó por decisión dividida, después de 15 asaltos en el Gimnasio de la Prefectura de Aichi.

El brasileño tenía la primera mancha en su registro, después de 48 peleas y tres empates.

La revancha se dio, el 31 de mayo del año siguiente, y nuevamente Harada ganó por decisión esta vez en el Nihon Budokan de Tokio.

Jofre hizo 25 peleas más después de su derrota con Harada, y hasta conquistó una faja del CMB, y se mantuvo activo hasta 1976 cuando decidió colgar los guantes.

Se retiró con 72 triunfos, 50 por nocauts, dos derrotas ante Harada, y cuatro empates.

Después de su retiro, Jofre se dedicó a entrenar e invertir en algunos negocios. Además, integra el selecto grupo de púgiles en el Salón de la Fama del Boxeo.
