The WBA mourns the death of Angelo Dundee

Angelo Dundee, the legendary boxing trainer, who made great boxing figures like Muhammad Ali and “Sugar” Ray Leonard, among others, passed away on February 01, at the age of 88, due to a heart failure.

The World Boxing Association deeply regrets the sensible pass away of the Hall of Famer Angelo Dundee. Dundee was inducted in 2004 as recognition for his long years of dedication training and helping boxers achieve their dream of becoming world champions.

“One of the greatest strategists of the boxing world passed away, he set unforgettable moments in memorable fights”, said Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, WBA vice-president.

La Asociación Mundial de Boxeo expresa públicamente su saludo de felicitaciones a la mexicana Jackie Nava, nueva campeona del ente, en la división supergallo.

La Princesa Azteca, como se conoce a la púgil, venció en diez asaltos a la panameña Shantall “La Fiera” Martínez, con tarjetas de 99-90, 100-89, 100-89, en la pelea realizada en Tijuana.

Es por este motivo, que deseamos expresarle “estamos honrados de contar con ella en nuestra historia”, declaró el vicepresidente ejecutivo de la AMB, Gilberto Jesús Mendoza.

There is a lot written on the serious injuries in Boxing such as concussion, brain injuries, and fracture of the skull and facial bones. I would like to present to you some of the other injuries in Boxing such as cuts of the face, haematomas, eye injuries, hand injuries and strains and sprains.

Boxing is the only sport in which the objective is to render blows to the head and body of the opponent so as the cause the opponent to be incapacitated. Regardless who wins the fight; both boxers can have serious injuries at the end of twelve (12) rounds of boxing.

Vuelve la Cena Anual de Premiación de la AMB y Panamá será la sede

Prensa AMB. 26 de Enero.-Después de cuatro años, se realizará nuevamente la Cena Anual de Premiación de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, que en esta oportunidad se llevará a cabo en el Hotel Intercontinental Miramar Panamá, en la Ciudad de Panamá, el próximo 29 de Febrero de 2012, a las 8:00 pm.

La intención no sólo es rescatar el importante evento, sino también el de resaltar el desempeño profesional de todos los galardonados en esta oportunidad.

En un principio las cenas se hacían en los Estados Unidos, luego fue a Venezuela y Argentina, pero se realizaron hasta el año 2008, la entrega de premios y reconocimientos a los mejores del año anterior se realizaban en este tipo de evento, que por diferentes razones se fue perdiendo y se continuaron entregando durante las Convenciones Anuales.

Union Boxing Promotions ganó la subasta realizada en la AMB.

La pelea estaría pautada para el mes de abril, y significaría la cuarta defensa del campeón del peso welter. Golden Boy Promotions había ofertado para realizarla en Nueva York, Palermo o Milán.

Ganador de Huck vs Povetkin deberá medirse a Hasim Rahman

El acuerdo se estableció durante la mañana de este lunes, en las oficinas de la AMB en Panamá. La pelea entre el alemán y el campeón ruso de los pesados se realizará el 25 de Febrero en Alemania.

Prensa AMB, 23 de Enero.- Los promotores Gregory Cohen y Chris Meyer, representantes de Marco Huck y Hasim Rahman, se reunieron en las oficinas de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, durante la mañana de este lunes, y acordaron una pelea con Hasim Rahman.

Huck subirá al ring el próximo 25 de febrero, en el Porsche-Arena, de Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Alemania. El alemán será el retador del ruso Alexander Povetkin.

La reunión se realizó en la oficina de la AMB, donde Cohen (GCP LLP) y Meyer (Sauerland Event), acordaron que el ganador de la Huck y Povetkin, deberá medirse con el estadounidense Rahman, retador mandatorio, en un período no mayor a 120 días.

WBA interim champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux (9-0, 7 KOs) scored a spectacular sixth round knockout over previously unbeaten WBA super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos (20-1, 11 KOs) on Friday night at the Pearl Theatre at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Rigondeaux got Ramos’ respect early by dropping him with a straight left in round one. The former amateur star dominated every minute of the fight until putting Ramos down for the count with a left to the body in round six. Time was 1:29. After the fight, Rigondeaux called out Nonito Donaire.

New Year’s eve is the time of the year where all wishes, thoughts and expectations, travel through every corner of our mind. Boxing, good or bad, maintains its individualist atmosphere. It seems like time is still, and all the main players remain in a state of disunity and inequality. Excessive and caustic criticism will never lead to the harmony and comprehension necessary to reach a balance between economic power, fans’ needs, sanctioning body rulings and boxers’ benefits and development. America is the mecca of boxing and the dream for any boxer in the world. To date, the U.S.A. maintains its worldwide sports status.

The WBA had a very active year with a total of 80 championship bouts, including 23 interim and 15 super champion titles. Without any doubt the most criticized topic of the organization. While our goal is to increase boxing popularity and give more opportunities, another sector feels it is a form of adding confusion to the sport.

Perhaps, regarding interim titles, the WBA shall be vigilant as to the quality of boxers involved, consistent with the rules or even consider avoiding the topic altogether. The fact is any action will not stop the alleged proliferation. With so many young boxers and future legendary promoters starting from the bottom, and broadcasters demanding titles, other organizations may emerge. In the end we all form part of this community. Thus all your comments and concerns are welcome and considered with respect and understanding.

Another controversial point would be neutrality and officials’ performance in close bouts. Regarding the referees or judges, who are the face of fairness and justice in boxing, uniform criteria along with world title experience shall be guaranteed to participants. Within the current rules, local commissions must provide neutrality.

Coordination and agreement between major sanctioning bodies is necessary to face the same obstacle together. Working with promoters and TV networks is unfinished business to be pursue.

A close relationship with all boxers, and especially champions, listening to their concerns and thoughts would continue to be a top priority. After all they are the core of the business.

AIBA has made clear statements to expand its operation in the professional business or including pro boxers in the Olympics. Without any disrespect- the essence of amateurs is to build careers, facilitate the basics and respect for boxing. In these they shall focus.

Bringing back the importance of trainers, promoting seminars and certifications, is another task overlooked through the years. In the end, these mentors are the channel to bring hungry young kids a better way of living.

Uchiyama KO's Solis

Unbeaten Japanese puncher Takashi Uchiyama racked up the fourth defense of his WBA Super Featherweight title on Saturday with an emphatic 11th round knockout against visiting Mexican brawler Jorge Solis in Yokohoma, Japan. Uchiyama was in control for most of the evening, with the outcome – at least from the perspective of who would win – never in doubt. Solis had his moments over the course of the evening, but for the most part looked like a past-prime battle-tested veteran. The flow of the fight was hardly a surprise as Uchiyama was heavily favored to win. What came as a shock – both suddenly and in general – was the fight’s ferocious ending.

Uchiyama was landing with regularity and appeared to be inching closer towards forcing Solis into submission. Ever the warrior, Solis refused to go away quietly, so the defending titlist decided to turn out his lights in a flash. A sweeping left hook caught Solis flush on the chin, flattening the Mexican as he laid motionless (though conscious) beneath the bottom rope. The crowd went ballistic as the bout was waved off on the spot so that the Mexican could receive immediate in-ring medical attention. The official time was 0:19 of the 11th round.

Uchiyama improves to 18-0 (15KO) with the win, his biggest since winning the title two years ago.

Celestino Caballero Outpoints Satoshi Hosono

Celestino Caballero made the first defense of his WBA featherweight belt with a unanimous decision over Satoshi Hosono in their 12-round bout Saturday in Yokohoma, Japan. Scores were 118-109 (twice) and 116-110 in their title fight. Caballero (36-4, 23KO) was in control throughout a bout that resembled man versus child given the massive size difference. Hosono remained game throughout the contest, but struggled to work his way inside for most of the night.

Hosono (21-2, 15KO) enjoyed moments of success in the seventh and ninth rounds. Both rounds presumably went his way as the judges were hard pressed to score any other for the hometown fighter, who was deducted a point in the 10th round for rabbit punching.
